“We need society, and we need solitude also, as we need summer and winter, day and night, exercise and rest.”
— Philip Gilbert Hamerton

As a blogger who regularly shoots and shares outfits, I’ve become really familiar with my closet. AND the gaps in my closet.
I can’t hide from them, I see them! Right there, front and center.
And last winter I realized I had a gaping hole in my wardrobe, specifically in my coat collection.
Oh, believe me, I have PLENTY of coats.
But almost ALL of them are neutrals. You couldn’t find a bright, cheery color if you tried.
I do love my neutrals but even I couldn’t escape the endless sea of tans, monochrome textures, and utilitarian solid colors I saw here on the blog day in and day out.
Sure I have a fabulous vintage cheetah print coat I inherited from my grandmother (that even made it to print!) as well as my all-trusty green Barbour. But pretty much every other coat I owned was a solid or printed neutral.
So when my mother and sister and I were clearing out my grandparent’s house this past summer, I saw this lovely cobalt coat sitting in her closet. I vaguely remember her wearing it once or twice and couldn’t resist the urge to add it to my collection. And I swear I’ve already worn it more this winter than I have any other coat… and we aren’t even halfway through January yet.
How did I live without a lovely blue winter coat in my life? I just love how bright and fresh it makes me feel, even in the bitter cold. Talk about embracing winter blues, right?
Have you recently filled a massive gap in your wardrobe? I’d love to know what investment pieces you’d endorse!
